The screening on the Lido Island finished, and yesterday the jury headed by Guillermo del Toro distributed awards.
"The Golden Lion" went to Alfonso Cuaron - one of "The Three Amigos", three Mexican filmmakers who received four of the last five "Oscars" (Del Toro, Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu). It is to be recalled that the rights for Cuaron's "Roma" belong to the streaming giant Netflix, which was not allowed at Cannes this year. The service wanted to step into the world of serious movies quietly; Netflix planned a modest campaign - a simultaneous premiere in 190 countries and a limited release. This should allow the film to qualify for Oscar - but, apparently, now the plans will have to be changed.
The Yorgos Lanthimos's "The Favourite" received two awards: the Grand Jury Prix and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for Olivia Colman (it was she who replaced Claire Foy in "The Crown"). The Cup for the male role was given to Willem Defoe for Van Gogh. Besides, on the sidelines of Venice, he is already tipped for Oscar.
In the alternative program "Horizons" one of the prizes - Best Actress - was received by Natalya Kudryashova. She made her first appearance in the movie "The Man Who Surprised Everyone" by Natalya Merkulova and Aleksey Chupov. The film tells the story of the Siberian forester, who is fighting cancer. In the lead role - Evgeny Tsyganov.
